A few things I'm loving these days

Monday, January 15, 2018
I follow quite a few bloggers that periodically share things they are loving, things that are making them happy. I love these types of lists. Does anyone else? I love that they give me a peek into some of my favorite blogger's personal lives and I almost always find something new to love myself. So, today, I'm sharing a few things I'm loving these days.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS
I love goal setting and fresh starts, so January is always an exciting time for me. This year is no different. I've set five goals for myself this year, in the areas of reading, health, finances, home and journaling. I haven't gotten brave enough to publish all of those goals here, but maybe I will one day.

CHATBOOKS
My daughter recently ordered her first Chatbook, a book created from her photos and captions on Instagram. I fell in love with it and knew that I needed to order my own. I've already set up an account and have edited my first five books. They are being shipped as I type. I can't wait to get them in my hands and to continue ordering them as I post more on Instagram.

BLURB
I have been blogging (personally and publicly) for quite a while. I started as a way to keep in touch with my family and friends that are spread all over the country. I don't blog as often now, thanks to Instagram and Chatbooks, so I've thought about deleting my blog altogether. Yet, I can't imagine losing all of the journaling I've done over the past ten years. So, I've decided to take my blog and turn it into a book. Blurb, a company made to do such a thing, is helping me do so. I've already set up an account and have started my first book. It isn't quite as easy as Chatbooks. It's going to require quite a few more hours, but I know I am going to love the books when they are finally done and are in my hand. Once they are done, I may delete my personal blog. We will see.

MY READING JOURNAL
Last year was the first year I kept a reading journal and I loved it. It's been so fun to look back on all I read last year. I've decided to keep another reading journal this year. It is all set up and ready to go. One day I may share just what I record in my reading journal.

BOOKSTAGRAM
I joined the Bookstagram community just over a year ago and have absolutely loved it. I've met some beautiful people and have been introduced to some amazing books. I began to involve myself a bit more in the community over the past few months and hope to continue to do so in the future. It has only been good for my reading life.

2018 Reading Goals

Monday, January 1, 2018
I read 94 books in 2017. 94! I think that is amazing, but I'm also not happy with that number. There is nothing wrong with that number, but when I look over the actual books I read, I am disappointed to see so few classic books on that list, as well as so few works of nonfiction, two categories of books I love but seem to ignore when I am reading such a high quantity of books in a year. I want to read more of them both. I also want to read more from my shelves. With all of that in mind, here are my goals.

READ MORE CLASSIC LITERATURE

READ MORE NONFICTION

READ MORE FROM MY SHELVES (PHYSICAL/KINDLE/NOOK/GOODREADS)

How am I going to accomplish these goals? My plan is to choose one book for each of these three categories at the beginning of every month and then read them that month. Pretty simple. I typically read four to eight books a month, so I am hoping this leaves plenty of room every month for spontaneous reading, which I love.

Are you setting reading goals for 2018? I'd love to hear about them in the comments!

A few things I'm loving these days

I love that they give me a peek into some of my favorite blogger's personal lives and I almost always find something new to love myself. So, today, I'm sharing a few things I'm loving these days.

GOOD CHAPSTICK
Winter is definitely here and it is dry. I always forget just how dry winters are. My lips take the brunt of it and I seem to be constantly reaching for my chapstick. I have tried quite a few brands over the years, but I always come back to my favorite. It's simple and does its job.

GOOD LOTION
Have I mentioned it's dry here. Not only are my lips taking a beating, but my hands and feet and everything else are as well. Right now I am loving this lotion. Again, it's simple and does its job.

FUZZY SOCKS
I'm sure fuzzy socks are not new to anyone else, but this is my first winter wearing these type of socks and I am loving them. My favorite pair are these from Target. They keep my feet so warm, a must when most of our house has hardwood floors.

BLANKET SCARVES
Blanket scarves have been around for awhile now, but I am just discovering them for myself this year. I currently have my eye on this one from Amazon. These scarves truly keep me warm.

BROWN PAPER AND RED AND WHITE TWINE
I am busy wrapping gifts around here, and while I'm still using regular wrapping paper for most of my gifts, the really special gifts are being wrapped with this and this. I love the simple yet beautiful presentation this creates.

MY NEW BOOTIES

I have finally found the perfect pair of booties. I had been looking for two years! Yes, two years! I knew exactly what I wanted, but couldn't seem to find them. I wanted something classic, on trend, but not too trendy, that was real leather, so they would stand the test of time. I also wanted something that didn't have much of a heel, so I could wear them comfortably all day. Well, I finally found them and I couldn't be happier with them. (I sized up a half size which was perfect for my wider, high-arched feet.)

ESSIE NAIL POLISH

This is my current favorite color.  I've been wearing it since September 1st. It is the perfect Fall/Winter color. I've got my eye on this color right now and might just have to pick it up today. I've never been a huge nail polish kind of girl. Mainly because it always seemed to go on terribly and then look terrible. On a whim one day, I picked up Essie nail polish because its specific color caught my eye. I quickly fell in love. It went on smoothly and looked great. Essie isn't terribly expensive, but compared to the $1 bottles of nail polish I usually bought, it felt like a splurge. It turned out to be a great splurge. Perhaps I just needed to buy a better quality nail polish all along! I'm sure there are other great brands out there, but for now, I'm all about Essie.

MY NEW WATER BOTTLE

I finally found the perfect water bottle. It took buying one too many imperfect water bottles to finally decide what I really wanted in one. I wanted a water bottle that would keep my water cold, wouldn't sweat, would fit in my car's cup holder and was dishwasher safe. This one has it all and isn't bad looking either.

MY LIBRARY

I have always loved my library, but this past week my love grew even more. It now has a shelf called "Too Hot To Hold". This is a shelf dedicated solely to books that are in high demand and have long wait lists. I've heard these types of shelves most often called "Lucky Day" shelves, because you may be #111 on a wait list for a specific book, yet one day you could walk into the library and find it sitting on the "Lucky Day" shelf, truly making it your lucky day. By the way, #111 is not a random number. That is my number on the wait list for a certain book at my library right now. I am hoping to have a lucky day here soon!

GOODREADS

I have been using Goodreads for a long time, but it hasn't been until this past year that I have really felt like I've been using it to its fullest potential. I use it to track what I've read, but where I really use it most is to track what I want to read next. I'm going to be sharing exactly how here on the blog soon, because I'm loving it so much!

MY NEW PLANNER

I recently purchased this planner and am loving it. I would definitely call myself a planner geek. I am always trying out different planners, figuring out the best way to keep track of all that is happening in my life. Well, I've been using this planner for almost a month now and it is working really well for me. It is structured enough to give me a great jumping off point, but not too structured that I feel restricted. I'm hoping it's a keeper.

PAPER MATE FLAIR PENS

These are my new favorite pens. I recently discovered them and have been happily using them ever since. I love the bright, bold colors. Best of all, these don't bleed through the paper in my planner or journal! I love the gray for everyday use in my planner and journal. I love the tropical for everything else.

MY DESK

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I am digging my desk right now. The work I do there day in and day out isn't always fun, but being surrounded by my lists, my pretty pens and my favorite Jane Austen novels makes it my happy place.

PODCAST: WHAT SHOULD I READ NEXT

Are you listening to this podcast? If not, and you are a reader of any kind, you should be. It is fantastic. Every week, Anne Bogel, the genius behind the blog Modern Mrs Darcy, talks to one guest, asking them to share three books they love, one book they hate and what they've been reading lately. Anne then shares three books they should read next. My personal TBR has grown tremendously since tuning in.

MY FAMILY'S FAVORITE PUMPKIN COOKIES

We may only be a few weeks into fall, (and it may still be in the 80's with crazy high humidity here in Virginia,) but I have already made these pumpkin cookies three times. They are my family's absolute favorite this time of year. I'm wishing I had a batch made right now.

I'd love to know what you are loving these days! Share below in the comments.

7 tips for fitting more reading into your life

Wednesday, October 11, 2017
I get asked all the time, "How do you read so much?" Sometimes it sounds like, "How do you find the time to read?" Most often it sounds like, "I wish I had the time to read like you do." I want to say, "You do!", but I usually just smile. Not today. Today I'm sharing my tips for fitting more reading into your life.

READ WHAT YOU LOVE

This sounds like a no-brainer, but it's probably the most important tip. Read what you love! Sometimes I find myself in a reading rut. (Yes, it even happens to me.) I find myself not excited to pick up a book. When I step back, I realize I have been reading a lot of best-sellers or others' recommendations. I haven't been reading what I love. Now, when I find myself in a reading rut, I stop listening to others and search for a book I know I will love.

SCHEDULE READING TIME INTO YOUR DAY

This sounds a little crazy, but it works. My scheduled reading time is 1-2 pm, every day. It doesn't happen every single day, but I find that scheduling reading time makes it more likely to actually happen. Why 1-2 pm? That is the hour before my kids get home from school. I find that if I work hard all morning while they are in school, then give myself an hour of reading time, I am much more happy to welcome my kids home and much more prepared to work hard all afternoon, helping kids with homework, making dinner, etc. That happiness mostly comes because reading energizes me, but also because I know I've had reading time that day.

PUT AWAY YOUR PHONE (OR OTHER DEVICE)

I am guilty of spending way too much time on Instagram. It is terrible. I enjoy social media and my phone makes it so accessible. A little too accessible. I find that if I have my phone near me while reading, I am likely to pick it up at the end of a chapter to do a quick check of Instagram. All of the sudden, that quick check has turned into twenty minutes, or more! Sometimes it's a text that distracts me. It will come in and I will put my book down to respond, whether it's urgent or not. These both result in a lot of lost reading time. To help keep me focused on reading, I now put my phone in a different room from myself and my book. Temptation gone. This has done wonders for my reading.

ALWAYS CARRY A BOOK WITH YOU

I always have a book with me, no matter where I am. It is amazing how much reading I can get done while out and about. I often find myself reading in the car while waiting for a child not quite ready to be picked up from school or an event, reading at the doctor's office when my doctor is running late or reading through a child's piano lesson. Without a book, I am positive I would spend that time on my phone, but if I have a book with me, I can fit in a page or a chapter or more.

LISTEN TO AUDIOBOOKS

Audiobooks are my best friend when I am in the middle of a project that doesn't require a lot of brainpower, such as painting kitchen cabinets, my current project. This particular project has required a lot of monotonous hours that would have been felt twice as long if not for audiobooks. My go to genre when working with my hands is nonfiction. I haven't quite mastered the ability to stay focused enough to listen to fiction, but if I ever do, watch out.

JOIN A BOOK CLUB OR COMPLETE A READING CHALLENGE

I've done both and I am amazed at the way they have added to and stretched my reading, in the very best ways. Book clubs and reading challenges have introduced me to books I would have never found on my own, books I have loved and adored and books that have challenged my way of thinking. I am currently a member of Modern Mrs Darcy's book club and am working my way through Modern Mrs Darcy's reading challenge. I highly recommend both.

HAVE YOUR NEXT BOOK READY

I almost always have a book sitting beside me, just waiting for me to finish my current read. (Actually, that book isn't a book, but a stack of books that is a little out of control. And doesn't include the list of books I have on Goodreads!)  Always having a book ready keeps me always reading. If I didn't have a book waiting, it would be too easy to let a few days or a few weeks pass before getting to the library or local bookstore to pick up my next read. I don't want to let that happen.

That's how I fit more reading into my life. Hope you can fit more reading into your life. Happy reading!

Welcome to Fashion & Fiction!

Thursday, May 25, 2017
I'm so glad you're here and can't wait to talk all things clothes and books with you!

To start things off, how about a quick tour? It's pretty simple. If clothes make you happy, "fashion" is where you'll want to click. If you are a bookworm like me, definitely click on "fiction". For everything else, click on "everything else". (Psst. There's nothing there yet, but will be soon!)  Finally, if you'd like to know a little more about me, click on "about". Of course, you can always simply scroll to your heart's content.

If you feel so inclined, I would love for you to follow along with me. You can subscribe through Blogger or subscribe by email. I'm on Instagram and Pinterest as well!

I really am glad you're here. Now, let's get to all those clothes and books!

2017 Reading Goals (a.k.a. 2017 MMD Reading Challenge)

Thursday, December 29, 2016
Up until this past year, I had never set reading goals. I'd like to say 2016's goal was set with a lot of thought, but it wasn't. I was browsing on goodreads.com one day early in January and was prompted by the site to set a reading goal for the year. I figured, why not? I began by checking how many books I had read in 2015 and then set my goal for one more in 2016. My goal was 61 books! Well, I surpassed my goal. I read 73 books in 2016! I am not sure how I read so many books. (Well, actually, that is a lie. I know how I fit so much reading into my life. If there is interest in how I do so, I may write a post about it in the future.) Anyway, after such a successful reading year, I thought I would set reading goals again this year, but this year I knew I wanted to put more thought into my goals. I thought I would try something a little different than simply aiming for a specific number of books to read. Aiming for a specific number wasn't really motivating for me. In fact, not once this past year did I think about my specific number. I simply read books and then recorded them on goodreads.com. So, what are my goals for this year?
